ActiveHealth Management’s Suite of Products Achieves a 51% Growth in Covered Membership in a 12-Month Period

ActiveHealth Management, Inc. (ActiveHealth®) announced today a 51% increase in covered membership for the 12-month period from January 2005 to January 2006, making 2005 a banner year for the eight year old firm. As a result of new business, primarily from health plans, self-insured employers and governmental agencies, ActiveHealth’s total membership across its suite of health management products grew from about 8.3 million lives to over 12.6 million lives.

A heightened focus on health care quality, better access to care and escalating costs are driving more health plans, employers and government entities to implement information technology solutions to improve care quality, reduce medical errors, provide better information to members and physicians and contain costs. Health plans and employers are increasingly embracing disease management programs, such as ActiveHealth’s URAC-accredited Informed Care Management (ICM) program, to help members with high-cost chronic conditions. As a result, ICM experienced a 31% growth in membership from January 2005 to January 2006.

ActiveHealth continues to expand its client base. In January, ActiveHealth expanded its relationship with Humana by providing services for the 230,000 members of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In February, ActiveHealth starting providing services to over 340,000 employees of State of South Carolina in tandem with BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, the program administrator. In addition, ActiveHealth’s ICM program received an endorsement from the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), which has recommended ICM to their local unions.

“We are extremely pleased with our progress, but even more excited about our future opportunities. ActiveHealth technologies are designed to improve health care quality, reduce medical errors and lower costs,” said Lonny Reisman, MD, CEO of ActiveHealth. “As innovators in health management, we continue to focus on new product development. For instance, we are developing the next generation of the CareEngine®, as well as a personal health record (PHR) that will be rolled out later this year.”

A key driver of the company’s growth is the CareEngine System, ActiveHealth’s proprietary technology platform. The CareEngine continuously compiles medical, pharmacy, laboratory and other member treatment data on an individual member basis and compares this member-specific information against established standards of care found in highly respected medical journals. The CareEngine analyzes member data against these evidence-based clinical findings and issues patient-specific clinical alerts, called Care Considerations, to members and their physicians when an opportunity to improve care or avoid a medical error is discovered. Care Considerations are sent via phone, fax or mail to the treating physician, and include specific references to medical literature. The CareEngine has been proven to significantly improve clinical outcomes, reduce medical errors and lower health care costs.
