Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts (www.bcbsma.com) offers personal and group health insurance plans. Their website includes sections for members, providers, group leaders, and producers. Also offers selection of links to numerous consumer health sites.

According to a reviewer at Amazon.com, they posted some interesting information:

To start with - portions of the site are explicitly coded to deny access if you use a browser other than Netscape Navigator or MSIE. Mozilla, the successor to Navigator, is among those not supported, although it’s widely used.

The site isn’t indexed well. It looks like it was built by a print designer or print marketing wiz, as opposed to someone who knows how to make a site usable. The search engine doesn’t do a good job of actually finding anything.

Like all insurance companies, BCBS has different levels of care for different people - they handle this by having pages that are so vague as to be useless, and by requiring logins (which check the browser) to get to self-service. Personalizing the pages, instead of requiring logins, would probably have been better. For companies like BCBS, one main reason to have websites is to prevent calls to your call centers - this site doesn’t do that.
