Local Caregivers Look to NASA Technology to Help Ease Back and Neck Pain
At first glance, the scene looks more like a computer troubleshooter servicing a network server. But the intricate technology is the impetus behind the medical treatment of spinal decompression for back pain caused by herniated disk, sciatica, lumbar stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal canal due to bulging of the disk, and chronic back pain.
But while the atmosphere may appear highly technical, it’s the touch of health professionals at Santa Margarita Medical Group in Rancho Santa Margarita in combination with NASA skill supported by IBM microprocessor technology that helps Orange County residents walk away from pain/ digitize their pain away with spinal decompression.
This spine decompression module was developed by a physician who saw the benefit of providing a precise level of decompression to herniated or damaged disks in a person’s spine to allow it to heal naturally. In a study published by the American Journal of Pain Management, 86 percent of patients studied achieved measurable, positive results and less pain, thanks to spinal decompression.
“The vast majority of those coming to us have tried other options and alternatives to relieving their back pain,” says Dr. Phil Straw of Santa Margarita Medical Group, who, with Dr. Matt Goda, has treated thousands of patients in his chiropractic practice. “One wonderful thing about spinal decompression is that it’s a painless, non-invasive (non-surgical) healing type of treatment, not one that cuts away skin, bone or other tissue.”
For those patients who don’t find satisfaction (the other 14 percent) in the spinal decompression treatment, Dr. Goda says that in severe spinal cases, they refer patients for further consultation, either to a neurologist or orthopedic specialist. “Additionally, we’re looking at ways to help patients prevent the return of pain by stabilizing the core (abdominal area),” added Dr. Goda.
The doctors cite several health studies pointing to the importance of achieving a solid core, developed from specific exercises that will provide protection to the spine by strengthening the trunk
